Stanton Township, located in Houghton County, Michigan, has been working with Michigan Tech
students to develop and implement a management plan for 164 acres of property located along
the Portage Lake shipping canal.
Completed Work (Fall 2005)
- Capstone class completed a management plan.
- Plan was presented to the Stanton Township board.
- Stanton Township requested that FERM students work on implementation.
Completed Work (Spring 2006)
- Visited county courthouse for information on registered corners.
- Established approximate location of SW corner based on courthouse information.
- Started running property lines.
Work to do (Spring 2006)
- Finish property lines.
- GPS proposed timber harvest area.
- Conduct timber inventory on proposed harvest area.
- Assess site operability for summer harvest.
- Determine feasibility of timber sale.
- Determine recreational development work that could be done as part of timber sale.
