Randall/Arsenault (Log Lake) Tract

The Randall Tract is located in the Michigamme highlands on Log Lake. Total tract size is 320 acres, plus an additional 40 acres in the recently donated Arsenault property. The harvest area is approximatelty 80 acres and contains several stand types: northern hardwoods; paper birch and balsam fir/white spruce.

The timber sale was completed during the winter of 2005-2006. A post sale inspection turned up a fair amount of pulpwood that was cut, but not skidded. Rutting was minimal and there was little damage to the residual stand. White pine was underplanted in the harvest area. On the southern end of the property, near the old yellow birch cutting trials, there was a fair amount of pine bark adelgid on sapling and small pole white pine trees. Pine bark adelgids are not native, but documentation suggests that the impact to the trees is not severe. The adelgids are currently far enough from the underplanted areas that it is not an immediate concern, but continued monitoring is recommended.
