MTU Section 30

The section 30 timbersale is located on MTU property surrounding the Ford Forestry Center in Alberta. Total harvest area is approximatelty 210 acres and contains mostly northern hardwoods, with sugar maple dominating. Tree marking followed the selection system while aiming to improve overall quality of the residual stand and promote diversity through the favoring of mid-tolerant species such as yellow birch. Pockets of hemlock were left intact for the most part due to the difficulty of regenerating this species (research in this area is in progress).

The sale was cut during January/February 2006. Due to the unusually warm weather, the logging crew had to play hopscotch and stick to the driest areas of the site. Some minor rutting on the east end of the sale occurred but overall everthing went very well.
