Smith Tract

In 1983, Michigan Technological University received a donation or 40 acres from the Charles D. Smith Family. The parcel is located in the SW ¼, NE ¼, Section 29, T54N R36W,Stanton Township, Houghton County, Michigan. A management plan was written for the tract during 2003 and the FERM was given the task of implementing the plan and managing the tract. Timbersale preparation was completed during the summer and fall of 2004. Property lines were marked, a stream buffer was established and tree marking was completed. The sale was originally advertised as a winter only job due to soil types, however, no bids were received after several advertisements.

During the summer of 2007, some additional work was done on the property lines (several unregistered corners in the area were found to be in error by 250+ feet). These errors did not affect the Smith tract property lines significantly, but the west line was found to be off by about 50' on the south end and was corrected. The now fading paint on the trees was refreshed and the sale was readvertised as a late summer sale due to extremely dry conditions. The sale was bought on a lump sum basis, but will not be cut until December of 2007.
