Wildlife Camera

Talon Recon with infrared flash, NiMH rechargeable batteries, removable SD card.

A wildlife camera was purchased by the FERM in order to document the presence of a variety of wildlife species on MTU and partner properties. The students installed the camera at several locations during the spring 2007 term and were able, after much effort, to record some wolf pictures. The location settled on was part of a deer yard complex on the MTU Prickett Dam property. The site was baited with several fresh roadkill deer (backstraps removed of course) and several "not so fresh" roadkill deer. The camera did not work well in temperatues below 20 degrees, but once it warmed up later in the spring, the camera worked well and a pair of wolves were recorded.

Completed Work - Spring 2007

  • Selected several possible camera sites likely to have timber wolves (sign, habitat, etc...).
  • Installed camera in MTU Section 12 property - no luck.
  • Moved camera to MTU Prickett property - success!

To do

  • Locate an area frequented by one or more cougars and install camera.
  • Record pictures of cougar(s) and hopefully kittens.
